If you have recently had a hearing test, you may be wondering what to expect in terms of the results and whether you may have hearing loss. A lot of people assume that a hearing test will simply tell them whether they have hearing loss – a yes or no type of result. However, a hearing test can unearth a lot more than this. You will find out about the extent of the hearing loss as well, which is, of course, important. With, continue reading to discover everything you need to know about how to understand the results of your recent hearing test.

What Will the Results Tell You After You Have Had Your Hearing Test?

A hearing exam is not a test that is simply going to give you a fail or a pass as a result. The results will tell you more than this. The audiologist is going to be able to deduce how severe the hearing loss is. Moreover, they will be able to use the test to find out whether you are experiencing hearing loss in one ear only or whether this is something that is impacting both of your ears.

To understand the results of the tests, you need to know a little bit more about sound and how it is measured. The unit we use to measure sound is what is known as decibels. This can determine the intensity of the sound. To give you a better understanding, if someone was to talk into your ear at a normal level, this would typically be around 60 decibels. If someone was to whisper in your ear, on the other hand, this would be as low as 30 decibels.

When you receive hearing test results, the results are going to be provided based on the level of hearing loss you’re experiencing. For example, 26-40 decibels is deemed mild hearing loss. Next, 41 to 55 decibels are deemed moderate hearing loss, and 56-70 decibels is deemed a moderate-to-severe hearing loss. You then have 71-90 decibels, which is deemed severe hearing loss and finally, 91-100 decibels are deemed a profound hearing loss.

Your Audiologist Will Explain What Your Results Mean for You

Once you get your results from your audiologist, they will be able to explain what this means for you in terms of the future and the sort of hearing device that you may or may not need. Your audiologist will be able to tell you about the different hearing devices that are suitable and help you to understand how you can maintain a high quality of life despite your hearing problems.

When you have a hearing test, you are going to be able to find out whether you have hearing loss. In addition to this, you will learn just how severe the hearing loss is and whether this is something that is impacting one of your ears or it affects both.
